I unconsciously taught myself this method as well as a youth so I could amaze people with my ability to multiply large numbers in my head quickly, usually faster than they could input it in a calculator. However, when I did it on paper, I would do it the old way, as I was taught in school! Interesting enough, I was teaching a class recently on data communication networks to AT&T techs and had to get them to do binary->octal->decimal->hex arithmetic in order to deal with IPv4 network address issues (network class, subnets, etc). I was still using the old methods, formally (as the syllabus dictated), but to get them to "see" the process more easily in their minds, I went to the "newer" process. They learned, and did well, but it was still a struggle!
WHAT MORONS! Speaking of Sony and their hired goons... Well, here is one person who will NEVER purchase another Sony product, ever! Time to organize a world-wide Sony boycott, IMO. No $$ == no lawyers == no problem.
Personally, I no longer purchase major-label music. I buy CDs directly from artists. At least I know where most of the $$ goes to, and it helps them establish a real relationship to me. And, I know they have no issue with me ripping their CDs to mp3 or other mobile format in order to play their music on the road, or otherwise. Finally, most of these artists don't mind if I give a couple of these mp3s to friends in order to turn them on to the music the artists are creating. In the long run, this is a benefit to them (free advertising).
Well, perhaps $430k isn't out of order for when a big start defames a small business owner (which I assume Simorangkir is), since their actions have much deeper and broader effect than some "little person" slandering/defaming a big star. Since I don't know much about this case, that's just a comment on the relative impact of what one person says vs. another when one is widely known, quoted, followed, and the other is just another head in the crowd.
My best guess is that this pinhead is jockeying for a position in industry when he is ready for a major promotion and more $$... See "Government/Industry Revolving Door" for details on this. :-(
If I tracked my speed with my GPS, I somehow don't think it would help get me out of a speeding ticket (most of the time). I drive as fast as "conditions allow", which may be legal in some areas, but not where I live... :-)
All politicians are liars. So, we should be surprised by this turn of events? I have always said that lawyers become politicians so they can write laws that only they know the loopholes for, so when they "retire" from politics, they have an automatic expertise to gain income from helping companies exploit the loopholes they themselves wrote into the laws...
Quod erat faciendum
Someone once said (and I often (mis)quote) - "There is no such thing as a new idea!"... Heck, I came up with the idea for laser discs on my own back in the 70's. I even wrote up ideas on the implementation of it. Does that mean that I can sue all the CD/DVD/BR manufacturers? Wouldn't that be (not) nice! :-)
As someone once said, it is far easier to ask for forgiveness ex-post-facto than permission before the act... That seems to be the modus operandi of the US DOJ in these cases. :-(
Well put. Couldn't have said it better myself, and I can say truthfully that rape (forced, statutory, or otherwise) isn't "nice", having been there, forced to do that...
Well, to my mind, any use of contents that are not one's own invention, ESPECIALLY in an academic setting, absolutely requires attribution whether or not it is required by license, law, or whatever. At the least, it is a simple mark of respect for the work and efforts of others. At the very least, it is a quid pro quo kind of situation if you expect recognition of your own work sometime in the future.
