"That, of course, is bad for the economy, bad for the public and bad for society. Innovation is important in growing the economy, and due to silly laws around DRM, we are purposely holding it back."
The legacy industry do not care about this as long as their monopoly is protected.
We elect politicians to care about this but that too is negated by the fact that our elected officials are very much in the pockets of the industry.
This is the crux of the problem. The public has no one of power and influence fighting for their interests.
How about realising that the Internet does not have freakin' borders and making a subscription available to people in other countries? They do exist, you know.
The only people who benefit from copyright are corporate middle men and lawyers. It is time for them to get screwed over instead of the public and content creators.

"Well, to begin with: there's actually NO relevant historical data before the internet. Purchasing a cassette or VCR tape and then enduring a 1:1 time ratio to copy it is QUITE different from being able to just click and have it flow."
If you are talking morality (as you are prone to do) then the copying of tapes to tapes and CDs to tapes is very relevant. When it comes to infringement and the morality of such activity, the scale of infringement is what is irrelevant.
Put together with the countless studies that the biggest illegal downloaders also spend more on legal content, I would be inclined to think this study has more merit.

Why do you believe that you can force your cultural, economic and military will on the rest of the world with impunity?
Leave the rest of the world to rule their own affairs and you worry about your own affairs.

Alternatively, if an artist hasn't a clue and makes no attempt to connect with fans and treat their fans as walking wallets, it will hurt their sales.
How piracy affects an artist is down to they way an artist promotes and distributes their work.
