btw, apologies for the blunt language but i don't like to mince words much and as i see it: selling yourself is selling yourself no matter how you cut it.
unfortunately it is all to true that police will not "protect and serve". as i have had to find out first hand, more than once. i have been mugged and attacked several times, even had hospital stays from some encounters (one of which cost me my last job).
now i carry at least three weapons on me (i dont have the luxury of living in a crime free and expensive neighborhood) when i leave after dark (i work 3rd shift at the moment): all less-lethal. retractable baton, taser model C2, and law enforcement grade mace (all legal where i am). so far i have had to use my baton twice, and mace once. haven't used the taser yet cause those cartridges are not exactly cheap, and they are slow to change out. i.o.w., only got 1 chance.
only reason i don't carry a gun is cause if it gets taken it will do more damage when turned on me. example: a bullet hits me, i am most likely dead. the taser, gotten for me by a friend on the condition that i take a jolt without the barbs (you get same amount of juice) so i see what i am doing to an attacker, did not hurt. i could not move, but it did not hurt. (not trying to sound tough. i used to work with electricity and my skin actually has extremely high electrical resistance, so i literally can't feel it.)
wow good thing i don't work tonight. i ramble when i am overtired. sorry for wall of text
unfortunately they are in reality treated like status symbols for the real criminals and wannabe toughs that go in. the big problem is that without any actual rehabilitation and reeducation... they tend to come out exactly how they went in. thuggish animals
are you really suggesting that inanimate objects can be innocent or guilty of a crime? an inanimate object does nothing on its own. that is like saying a spoon makes you fat or a pencil misspells words. also the 4th amendment protects against SEIZURES of property as well.
i am all for public shaming as a solution. make them carry signs in public that outline their bad deeds and encourage others to laugh at THEM for a change. i say fight fire with fire. bully beats up a kid: public caning until the victim is satisfied that bully learned their lesson. seems harsh but i think it would be effective (and probably the only thing that would be anymore)
