You know how people who justify their views through the first amendment are basically claiming that the only defense they have is that it is not illegal to say them? http://xkcd.com/1357/
National security and patriotism are the government version of that. When you have absolutely no justification for your argument, that's the way you go, with one minor difference.
See if you can spot it: Case 1 Asshole: You are all sheeple who deserve to die. You: Asshole, get the f**k out of my house. Asshole: F**k you I can say whatever I want. You: Say it somewhere else.
Case 2 Government asshole: You deserve to die for national security reasons You: *brains splattered on floor*/div>
If the US government has any interest in their sanctioning policies beyond using them as some kind of penis-measuring contest
You misunderstand. They're competing for the most ineffective sanction policy award with the UK.
The UK's current record is zero effectiveness with it's sanctions against the export of online MMO's to Lebanon, a country where a grand total of 5 people play UK based games, and where exactly 0 people are willing to pay for them.
Of course the only way the US could beat this record is by making sanctions that have negative effectiveness, hence this prime display of incompetence.
The problem is that for every app which requests only the permission it needs, there are many less than honorable apps which will abuse that process including high profile ones like whatsapp. I think it's a good idea, even though it could create extra work depending on how your app is designed./div>
Boss: Why are you playing world of warcraft? Employee: Because I'm.. uh.. TERRORISTS. Boss: Fair enough, carry on. Employee: Thank you sir.*continues playing* YOU GODDAMN NOOB... Boss: What was that? Employee: I mean TERRORIST. FUCKING TERRORIST. Boss: There you go.

I have an adequate internet connection(128 kbps), which is too slow for heavy duty usage but fine for day to day surfing of the web. It used to be though, until developers started making unrealistic assumptions about their users.
Let me give an example.
I'm a heavy google+ user, since all the tech circles are on there but the page is literally unusable for periods of time ranging from a few seconds to 15 minutes while the page and all the different services load. Twitter on the other hand loads rather quickly, it only takes a few seconds to load.
Despite the fact that I use the two services for entirely different things, I started leaning more towards twitter for about a month, and the kicker is I noticed two or three days ago that I was actually doing it. I spent weeks not noticing I was spending less and less time on google+.
Having a unique service wasn't enough to keep me using it, page load time affected my usage greatly.
Developers: smaller pages means less code therefore less maintainence time. We're not asking for miracles here. We're simply asking that you not to assume that everyone has google fiber at home./div>
If the amount of students getting detention in a school increased tenfold in two years there would clearly be something wrong with the school, not the students, but the analogy doesn't apply because pirates./div>
What he means is that it's perfectly acceptable for the print form of media to die, just as copying books by hand died out when the printing press was invented./div>
The thing is when you don't have to place advertising as a priority it allows you to listen to what the user wants, you don't have to put as much effort into trying to work ads into the paradigm, and that was what the people Mike is calling out mean by morally superior. The social network doesn't have to sell out to unknown parties to stay afloat./div>
"We're in a transformative period with an explosion of technology that's going to need content... We're going to have to be more subtle and consumer-oriented.... We're on the wrong track if we describe this as thievery."
Isn't global warming a natural process? We're simply speeding up the cycle not causing it. I think it's preserving resources that we need to raise awareness about, it's amazing how much people mix up the two.
Anyway, back on topic, who wrote that system, monkeys?!! This is not a mistake a self respecting programmer/designer makes./div>
