PRIVATE Corp's Favorite Techdirt Posts Of The Week
from the and-i-feel-fine-really dept
Hello everyone. My name is Cory J.G, better off known as Cory of PRIVATE Corp or Cory of PC for short, and I'm a fan-fic writer. I'm really a story-teller, with a wide array of skills under my belt, and I am in the process of trying to get a job. I do like to see myself doing something related to the entertainment business and, after much reading of the stories here on Techdirt, I am hoping that if I do enter the field, I would like to completely change things for, hopefully, the better.
Anyway, today I'm here to share my favorite stories for the week. So I won't waste any more time here, let's get started!
OOO
I found it strangely odd that when I went on Techdirt in the morning, I found two different stories involving the Pirate Party and suing. Granted one of them deals with the Swedish PP doing the suing against banks for their "discriminating" of WikiLeaks, and the other deals with the UK PP leaders getting sued by BPI personally for Internet proxies. I was thinking there was going to be a trend. No, we didn't get that, but we did get something that has the City of London's police force setting up a special copyright task force to deal with those inflicting infringement damage. Yes, I'm sure this will work out oh so perfectly... and that last part was sarcasm.
When I heard about the shooting that happened up in Newtown, I was getting back from school, and I was walking to my room. I was surprised to see a couple of the guys, who are your average sports fanatics, watching a news station until I saw what was going on. It is sad to see so many children injured or killed from such a tragic event (and I even shouted "hang him!" at the shooter, but he's already dead...), and I do wish all the comfort in the world to the families that were hit by this.
With that said, I'm beginning to develop some new opinions on the matter about laying blame. With all of the new studies coming in to say "hey, video games aren't the problem," you'd think that someone would catch on and put two and two together. And allow me to add that I'm a kid with Asperger's, a form of autism, and I've played a few violent video games in my time, including TF2, and I'm a genuinely nice boy!
For someone that spends most of his day in front of a computer and part of it on the Internet, I would hate to come across a block in data because I'm going over my limit. Really I would hate to be in the middle of watching one of my favorite Internet shows and then have my Internet crawling or come to a complete stop because of that limit. So there's a proposal made by one Senator Wyden about doing something about these stupid caps and making things better for those who love to upload and download stuff on their phones and computers, and it's a good first step. To have no data caps that will allow people to freely download as much as they like is great! Now if only I had access to better, faster Internet myself...
Finally... now I'm not one to curse or swear, mainly that's me being a bit courteous, but I'm going to drop it for this moment: what the hell is Kony 2012? No really, what is it? I had no idea what this was when it came on and when people were talking about it, but never once did I muster up the interest to look into the matter, simply because 1) it didn't matter to me and 2) there's are a whole lot of things to worry about other than one evil person. Now I really don't care about it, though I am interested in a short summary of it, but I didn't think a graphic novel would provide that summary... or that said comic would be accused of being a terrorist product.
What.
I, for one, don't read a whole lot of comics. Sure, I do read the stuff that comes out of Japan, but not much here in the US or anywhere else. Comics are one form of media that you can express your own views and tell it in a story format, but this? Well it's one thing to do this, but then to have the government come in and take away all the money you made off of a comic based off of some guy from the Congo. Yeah, and I thought those shouting "video games are the problem!" were bad...
OOO
So that does it for now. If you're getting out of your bunkers (or wherever you were hiding) or reading this because you have a connection, then congrats, the world didn't end and you can still access the Internet... Really, what are the odds of you still being online if the world's coming to an end? Wouldn't there be no power for your computer or connection to allow you to be online? Still, if you are reading this, then you know that you are very much alive and the Internet is still active.
For now, this is Cory of PRIVATE Corp, reminding you all to please support those who are truly in need and not the ones begging for attention. Feed the trolls if needed, and don't forget to feed yourselves this Christmas. Do enjoy yourselves and have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Now if you excuse me, I got some work to get done on my end...

If this is "nothing new" then why are they making a big deal outta this!? This seems like attention getting if they're trying to make one guy look like the biggest threat to the US, or just something to top the previous scandal./div>
(untitled comment)
Well there are reasons, but really I'm thinking anyone with some sense might've gone with cutting relationships with the one holding all of their secrets./div>
Re: Re: Re:
Re: Re: Re:
If you do, where's the proof? If not... then you're just proving a point./div>

(I know it isn't, but hey considering the way things are...)/div>
Re: Re:
I will agree with both you, the AC right below and Dark Helmet. From the way I see it, there's no true person we should blame in terms of parenting and the entertainment industry, but as dennis deems points out below, we're living in a society that celebrates, glorifies and even sexualize violence.
And I'm not saying that this is a bad thing... well, it is where it's at a point where we're pinning blame on a medium despite the fact there's little to no evidence to support these theories. OK, it's not bad to have some violence, but not in the way it is celebrating it. And part of it does stem from the fact that the system sees this as a selling point and it is making money off of it!
Plus I have to say that even though I've played a few violent games, I never have the intention of killing anyone... besides mosquitoes. So yeah, even with the disturbing imagery in my head, all attempts of killing are going to kill off mosquitoes.
But I do tend to agree that we need to do something to prevent the glorifying of violence. I really don't mind the violence, but if we can find a way to tone it WAY down and get a good amount of people off each other's backs... and maybe get some common sense before jumping to conclusions, and also mourn the lost before blaming others, then we could have a better understanding of how things go down./div>
Re: So... You're saying people would rather get it free...
YOU'RE the only one that's going to be paying for it! No freebies, just straight up paying... and not that cheap either!/div>
Re: Re: Cognitive dissonance?
Re:
And I'm sorry if I'm coming off rude, but again there are a few times that a person can't be heal with that kind of condition. Yes you can make the person feel better, but it's not a permanent fix./div>
Re: Re: "We Should Do Something!"
Whether or not we should be blaming parents or the entertainment business, if someone has some common sense in their head, then we wouldn't be having this argument!/div>
"We Should Do Something!"
And I just wish that we have something to prove that no matter what we see, when we get to a certain age that these things will be determined whether or not it's real or not. People are far more intelligent than who is in Congress.
And you know, if this is such a big deal, then why aren't they taking this to where this is coming from? Since Hollywood, the music and gaming industries are the ones "responsible" for making these violent messages, then should they be the ones to take the blame? I can see this as being a same issue if there's a whole lot of sexual imagery going around and there's a wide boom in sexual activity going on in the country.
But there's really nowhere we can go with this. It's one for the parents to decide whether or not to get their family what is appropriate for them to watch, and it is up to the entertainment industry to help provide content that is family-friendly and safe for the general public. But we don't have that and it's not going to change unless people get smart and learn what is right and what is wrong.
... And I would like to say that sometimes, people are just crazy because they are like that. They rarely need something like a movie or video game to make them snap. It just take the right motivation from the right person to make that crazy person go mad. And this is part of the reason why I don't bother with crazy people (most of the time) and I tend to keep my mouth shut (again, most of the time).
To when we get people in charge that actually knows these things instead of relying on (probably) bogus studies, then we'll see some changes. Otherwise, stay away from our games and shows. We don't need any more government influence on our entertainment.../div>
Re: Re: Re: Here here! Artists are people too...
And HA! I got a ton of projects myself and I don't need money to get those done? Why? Because frankly, why should I be paid to sell out my stuff when I can create my stuff when I want without anyone giving me a schedule to work with and how they want my product to be? I do like money, but I don't necessary need it for my projects because they can be done for free. I can write for free and I can draw for free. You're offering up your services for $100 and I haven't seen a single thing outta you.
You're funny. Really, you are. I haven't made a single cent yet in my trade, and I consider myself devoted to the arts more than you are./div>
Re: Re: Re: Here here! Artists are people too...
Re: "talking points" more effective than I thought.
And no. Why should he care about that link? It's more or less annoying than... whatever you're thinking about./div>
Re: Here here! Artists are people too...
And if I were to call the cops, it'll be to get rid of people like you. Thanks.../div>
Re: What's the purpose of Pirate Party's proxies? -- Infringement.
Hey, try using TV Tropes's link! That way, you're wasting your time over there as opposed to using the same link every single time!/div>
Please Leave...
Second, he's referencing the game, you blockhead! You're calling Mike out on a spelling error, compare to your growing number of grammar and spelling errors. Funny.../div>
Re: After a brief fling with Importance, Mike back to Drivel.
(NOTE: Not actually recommending a horrible idea. Carry on...)/div>
Re:
Do what for a reason? DRM? And does it? Can you cite a reference where it does?
"Open your mind. Understand you don't have all the numbers."
My mind's already open. And what about you? Do you have these numbers to back you up?
"There are young kids who don't know how to pirate and will try to share the DVD."
Do you have any idea what that sentence means? I don't, but unless you're trying to say that a kid doesn't know how to download a program, you're an idiot. That's basic knowledge! I'm pretty sure that if you give a kid a computer and tell him to rip a video off YouTube, I'm sure he'll find a way to do that in seconds. There's your "pirating."
"This will stop them."
Ha-ha, that's funny.
"Reddit is the tiny, tiny, vocal minority."
HAHAHAHAHA... You're an idiot.
"Do you know Diablo 3 sold over 8 million copies and has always online DRM that couldn't be cracked?"
And why should I care? If you're trying to sell me the game, that isn't working...
"It works."
[citation needed]
If you don't have anything to say, then get off the computer. You lost your ability to speak./div>
Re: Ever notice what Mike avoids?
Please, for all of the times I tell you to get off the computer, for the love of God DO THAT! Seek medical help! There're people out there that can treat you! No one's going to (or will) take you seriously if you keep on posting this nonsense!/div>
