DailyDirt: I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up 2.0

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

In the US, over half of the mobile phones people are using are smartphones, so it's not surprising that there's a nascent market for smart devices trying to take advantage of this existing user base. Wearables like smartwatches and smartglasses are nifty gadgets, but there could be other smart-things that might be hanging around necks or strapped to our arms in the near future. One feature for all of these smart accessories could be personal protection -- allowing the wearer to signal to friends/family/police in an emergency situation. Here are just a few examples (that are available for pre-order or need some crowdfunding love). If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

“I’m Forlorn And I Can’t Get It Up”

    Is that what you meant?

He may be, but I think not what he meant.:>

The issue I have with these, as a person who might need one soon, is twofold.

First, in order to track you all the time, a necessity for such a device, it needs to be connected all the time. I do not know of such a technology. There are some that get close, but all the time? Also, connectivity costs.

Second, if we were able to manage connected all the time, who has access to that information, and how long is it held, and what are the HIPPA issues (with the intent of HIPPA not the reality)? Any assertions by the manufacturer will be held with a great amount of suspicion.

Pepper spray with embedded selfie for criminals. Sounds like something Tim would write about.

i will bet you dollars to donut holes, that 99 out of 100 uses of this will be mostly kids playing tricks on each other, NOT thieves getting a face full of pepper...
