The only members of Congress still actively supporting/defending the NSA are the ones who have the largest campaign contributions from the survailance industrial complex.
What I haven't seen pointed out so far is the fact that the NSA defenders keep painting themselves into a smaller and smaller corner as their lies keep getting exposed.
First it was, "We don't keep any info on Americans." Then proof of that lie surfaces. Then it's "We don't intentionally keep any info on Americans." More proof that they're lying comes out, so then it's "But we don't abuse the info we keep on Americans." Now evidence of abuse shows up, so now it's, "It's 'inadvertant' and 'accidental' abuse, not malicious."
So how are we supposed to believe anything they say? And who want's to bet that there's no evidence of intentional and malicious abuse about to surface? I wouldn't take that bet no matter what odds I'm offered.
It sounds like the feds were demanding a full on backdoor on the system, not unlike some previous reports of ISPs who have received surprise visits from the NSA.
“You can look at it as a percentage of our total activity that occurs each day,” he said. “You look at a number in absolute terms that looks big, and when you look at it in relative terms, it looks a little different.”
He doesn't even realize what he's saying here. Not only are there abuses, but he's admitting they do SO MUCH SPYING that these thousands of cases of abuse are minor. How about if you can't cut back on the abuse, you cut back on the MOTHERF*#KING SPYING?!
If Udall or Wyden aren't on this review board, then this is an even bigger farce than I suspect it already is. I'd be willing to bet that our old friend Gen. Hayden manages to be named to this "independant" board seeing as he is a trusted national security expert, at least according to Face the Nation and the other Washington propoganda outlets.
Re: This quibble lets you dodge discussing the answers!
Even if Mike is absolutely right about problems, he has no solutions to even suggest.
You mean other than the solutions he suggested in this VERY POST which you obviously DIDN'T EVEN READ?
...the reasonable answer is clear: you tell them to focus on other business models -- like many of those represented by others on that panel. That is, you focus on the positive things you can do: connecting with fans, giving them reasons to support you, rather than on trying to stop things that won't stop and which have no likelihood of increasing your revenue.
Thank you for proving that you're nothing but a troll for the 800th time. Fuggin' moron.
Oh wait, only the centrists from both parties are in favor of widespread mass spying, and the far left and far right are opposed to it? Well no matter. I'll just label you a liberal anyway. It's easier that way.
I was thinking along the lines of BentFranklin and Ninja. If I was Google I'd go ahead and comply with the take down notice. Then when MS complains about it (biased algorithm, rabble, rabble) they can just point to the takedown notice and cover their butt. What's the downside to doing that? That would point out the ridiculousness of these notices as well as censor a competitor, at the competitor's request.
Not only is it in poor taste, but it seems an odd way to convince someone to vote against an amendment. Along the lines of an accused murderer starting his interrogation by the police with, "Who do I have to kill to get a drink around here?"
Did they not realize that the reporters would report on this treatment? Not very forward thinking individuals here. Any "rules" broken will pale in comparision to the backlash this will cause.
I can't say I blame you (if you really are Ed Snowden's father... do I not deserve my freedom for questioning an anonymous commenter's identity?) for being defensive with everything that's been going on lately, but slow your roll a tad. Take the time to actually read what's been said before you go off half cocked.
And if you actually are Ed's father, I wish you and your son nothing but the best. The county owes him a debt it can never pay, and you should take solace in the fact that history will remember him as a patriot, of this I have no doubt.
