Tens of thousands of record label employees have lost their jobs because their employer's content is being ripped off and thus they can't afford to employ as many people.
Bull. Shit. The entire reason a lot of record labels lost their jobs was because of the RIAA's disastrous campaign to turn everyone into criminals. Oh wait a minute. They're doing that right now.
If they just gave you a raise for talking points, it's time for them to get their money back.
Although, Alex could have done a better job in getting his argument out. He missed a few opportunities to make Cotton look like even more of a tool.
I'd like to think that the rogue websites argument could be taken down by point out that Google.ca would be liable for domain seizure. Not to mention that the "threat to jobs" comes from the implimentation of SOPA/PIPA, not the debunking of the need for it.
Mike, an honest question. Reid is the same man that put the entirety of the Patriot Act into a bill that was going to pass the Senate anyway. What stops him from doing the same thing for PIPA?
There are exactly two issues that concern me here.
1) What Lamar Smith seems to be interested in is getting the tech industry onboard for this bill. This equates to finding a way to make them entirely agreeable to the idea that they need to pass something here or else he has to give the MPAA their money back.
2) The public still hasn't been invited here. That's the entire problem. Has the KEI, PK, or CEA been contacted in regards to these issues? I'd love to see if Michael Petricone could possibly speak to some of these congresscritters and show the importance of fair use to them.
The implications of this are much further than we can understand here. This sets up shop for Britain to try other "criminals" in the US for abusing copyright law. And it's all being done on the US taxpayer dime. Think about if Scotland had a cammer upload a video of Avatar onto the internet. Now, they have to worry about being extradited to the US. And they get to go to federal prison for a non violent crime.
So I have to ask... If the Hollywood movie industry is so great, why the hell are they looking to criminalize filesharing when they've made more money than anyone else? It makes no sense how one industry has so much power that they can destroy lives for nothing other than sharing a file on the internet.
Why do people come onto the site to disparage others?
Yes, it's a result of the horribly atrocious voting system we have in place. We know. We have a minority rule in American politics that prevents the best candidate of any party from stepping forward.
We have politicians that can be bought, that take money from Rupert Murdoch as well as the likes of Jack Abramoff in order to make 22,000% investment returns on their businesses through regulatory capture of the market.
But what people constantly miss while they admonish the US is the grassroots of the Occupy movement, showing that frustration of a system that is more interested in keeping itself going instead of making society better.
Believe me, there will be a lot of truths coming out in the next few months. No revolution came overnight.
An actual public domain where people could pull from various sources and make stories or products without worrying about copyright infringement our infringing on a patent.
I would love to see any of them pull the same crap on the open floor of debate. I do so hope someone has a video of this debate and puts it on the internet. Then let's REALLY get creative with their recorded arguments!
She's got the talking points from Mitch Glazier. They're slimy individuals paid to sell out the public. The IP laws are a joke and everyone sees them as the charade they really are. If she's as smart as to be intended by her background, then she should be able to speak to the public and stop dodging the questions. But every last copyright supporter continues with the same points. Glazier, Tepp, Aistars, and even O'Leary can't say "it's for the artists" when it's not, nor can they say "this progresses the arts" when taking down a website involves more work than actually making a better alternative.
I mean seriously, when has any of the maximalists that are discussed here brought in a better alternative to Bittorrent?
You can also find her work here, where she talks about the "copyright holders" instead of the artists.
The talking points have been found out and they won't work for this issue. No rogue website has harmed an artist that utilized the technology properly. And still, the MAFIAA make money. What exactly does PIPA/SOPA intend if the artists are making money?
The problem is her background. She's a paid lobbyist for the studios, not really an artist herself. Given how she worked as Vice President and Associate General Counsel at
Time Warner, I doubt she'd know much about what artists need to survive. And the fact that artists speak up against her is very telling. She needs new ideas because the current ones just aren't working.
