Well I'd go with some of the obvious stuff that Mike is always talking about to start with.
How about paid memberships for access to a premium members area? Have things like blogs from the porn stars in there, let them build a relationship with their fans. Let the members suggest ideas or themes for entire movies or for scenes (I would think scenes would be more practical since I would think the YouPorn/RedTube clip style of porn fits the interwebz a little better than full length movies). Have an option to pay 'X' amount of money and get a short (ie couple minute) long personalized clip from your favorite actress/actor. Auction off "props" from the movies to the fan base.
There's a couple of ideas off the top if my head. Really the more I think about it easier it gets. We could do this all day. :)
It looks like this particular promotion involves uTorrent (a BitTorrent client) bundling an album with any new download of their client software, BitTorrent Inc develops uTorrent.
I think it is a little ironic that the free album doesn't come as a torrent download at all but rather with an everyday HTML file download (correction, looks like you can grab a torrent as well, however that isn't the main "promotion"). I think to really promote an artist we need to see a central torrent site doing so on the main page or something. The Pirate bay has done similar promotions in the past and from all accounts it has results in greater interest in the artist being promoted.
And how do "all of you" act? "It can't be true, it can't be true!! We won't debate it because we don't believe it can be true!"
Just because people don't want something to happen doesn't mean you can stop it from happening. You don't like file sharing? Get off of this blog and get back to stopping it. Let me know how that turns out for you.
The Netflix streaming model is pure win. That model is the easiest for content companies to make money with. It is really the best of both worlds. Content creators get to DRM the crap out of content and they make sure consumers don't own it and consumers don't really care because they have 24/7 access to tons of content.
Why bittorrent a movie when I can just fire up the xbox and stream that same movie to my TV? The only problem with the current model is waiting on the DVD window. Bittorrent still looks pretty darn appealing when I can get a DVD quality rip right now or I have to wait 3 more weeks for the legal Netflix version.
3D TV's are not a fad either. People have spent $55 million on 3D TV equipment in the first 3 months equipment has been available. There are like 4 Blu-ray movies available in 3D, The Master and the World Cup was in 3D and now the PS3 has a couple of games in 3D. Yet people are still buying 3D gear for the home.
What is a "bandwidth hog" exactly? Someone using what they paid for? I feel zero sympathy for ISP's who get all upset that people are actually using what was sold to them. I bought the use of a 15/2 Mbps connection, I fully expect that I can use it as advertised. If you don't want people to use it don't sell it.
Who cares? She burnt herself on some hot coffee, why should McDonald's pay for any of that? Common sense needs to prevail in some situations, do you pour scolding hot liquid on yourself and blame whoever gave you the liquid?
I believe that copyright was originally intended to "promote the progress of useful arts and science" (quote off the top of my head, forgive me if it is wrong). So in that sense copyright wasn't about control per se, it was about promoting progress. When it was introduced it was believed that by controlling who could copy what it would generate greater incentives to create.
The "but copyright was never about control" quote seems a little nit-picky to me. Sure it wasn't about control, it was about promoting the creation of more works, but it accomplished that through control of those works.
Re: Why waste time writing such a pointless article
I'm pretty sure Mike hired himself. You are helping to pay his wages by visiting his site. You are one of those worthless people who help to support other worthless peoples endeavors!! For shame.
Shouting down? They can't try to disprove a comment they do not agree with on a message board? You do it on every single story! Who is paying you too much?
So?... Disconnect the critical systems from the internet? Why would something that can cause so much damage if "attacked" be connected to the internet in the first place? If they did that you still wouldn't hear about attacks because they wouldn't be possible, what an idea!
I am Canadian and I can tell you that the vast, vast majority don't even know they are paying this levy. I'm sure if people were aware that 90% of the price of their blank media was going to this levy you would see some protests of some sort (that or an increase in "piracy", hey we're paying for it already aren't we?).
Nah, I think the Netflix model is the future. The streaming part anyway. Flat monthly charge for access to the latest and greatest as well as a massive back catalog.
Find a way to stream that directly to people's TV's (Xbox/PS3 perhaps?) and people will pay for it. They'd need a mobile app as well or people would still pirate the show to get it on their iPod or Blackberry or whatever. The problem is the industry would never do this, they would charge too much and want to charge for each separate device to have access. Hence pirating will continue.
