Ah, yes. And the right is sooo much better, as long as you are part of the "Christian Nation."
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we've got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." ~ Stephen Colbert
"We live in a world where we honor, and support the honoring of, intellectual property," says Ballmer in an interview. FOSS patrons are going to have to "play by the same rules as the rest of the business," he insists. "What's fair is fair."
What I find completely disgusting about this statement is that Microsoft was able to build its business without any intervention of the patent system, as every coder or computer-savy person I knew was of the opinion that anything covered by copyright could not be patented. Had patents been available, Microsoft would probably be in the same shoes as Compaq is - a dead division of another company. Bill Gates himself has admitted as much.
Steve Balmer, and Microsoft in general, are truly an organization of honorless hypocrites, totally lacking any integrity, in my opinion.
I used HotBot, then AltaVista, then Dogpile. Each had the flaw of being quickly skewed by people gaming their algorithims. Now, after many years, Google is being skewed as well. I can rarely find a valid link for my coding issues, and that normally spells the end of an engine.
It's funny to see this hearing now that Google is about to lose it's search edge. Maybe they'll "tweak" the engine again...
I see where the Chief is coming from. He doesn't have the budget to properly staff his police force, and he wants the voters to feel the pain until they vote to give him more money. Also, the guy was untrained and unauthorized, and could pose a safety risk if allowed to direct traffic.
*That said*
If these backups are a regular occurance, it would seem that deputizing and training volunteers would be a better idea than ticketing someone who helps out. Reach out, slap the guy on the back, give him safety training, and you have just reached out to the community in a time of crisis. Instead, the Chief has just gone a long way to further alienate people from the organization which is supposed to protect them.
Should be a non-starter. These guilds do not have standing to sue for infringement.
Obviously they think they can threaten Google and the universities into capitulation. Guess they weren't paying attention to the Righthaven cases.
Yes, you are absolutely right. We should never allow personal freedom to interfere with corporate marketing. He shouldn't be able to wear any clothing with logos, drive any vehicle, or use any toothpaste except store brands.
Yep, I'm dumber for having read the above post.

These companies should have thought up their own logos, instead of stealing Apple's! It took Apple Computers years of hard work to rip off Apple Records and win in court! Apple is just sharing the love...
I listen to NPR a lot, and just about the only time I hear Ron Paul's name is on the Diane Rehm show, and they are generally remarking how the media is ignoring him.
It was very strange, listening to several Republican analysts talking about the Straw Poll and completely ignoring the #2 guy.
I disagree with 90% of what Ron Paul has to say, but this is ridiculous.
In future arguments, intellectually challenged pro-patent individuals will claim that ON-ART "invented" this technique, purely because of the patent.
It sickens me that true innovators like Henson don't bother patenting their designs, while late adopters go for the patent.
Apple UX, aka "Don't give the user enough rope to hang themselves." Not the worst strategy obviously, but extremely annoying to a lot of people (myself included.)
What I find exceptionally bizarre about this turn of events is that Apple hated 3rd party developers for soooo many years. To this day, it's hard to find someone who codes for Mac, much less enjoys it.
Apple has closed the door on the customizable PC, possibly for good. When they say, "Post-PC", they are really saying, "Web-browsing entertainment appliance." It's not a computer, any more than your car is. Yeah, it has chips. That's about it.
In the eyes of the law, Corporations are considered to be people. But there is one huge problem: when do they die? In Feudalism, we have a monarch who constantly controls the kingdom, all assets passed to the first born male. This was extremely unfair to anyone who wasn't the monarch. So, we went to Democracy. This is better, because everything gets divided more equally when the capital holder expires. Except that corporations never die. They are mini-kingdoms run by an appointed CEO and a bunch of other "presidents" that no one voted for.
The solution? Give them an expiration date. Put it in the charter that they will be dissolved in no more than 100 years (no one has a business life longer than that!), and that all physical and financial assets will be distributed to the shareholders, and all intellectual assets would enter the public domain.
The simple fact is, we need to stop feeding kings and queens.

BOTH sides are NUTS! This is why I am an independent.
We can easily go back and forth quoting crazy people.
How about some sanity for a change?
