Why would anyone bother stalking you TAM? At most your comments are slightly humorous while continuing to be misguided and less than insightful. Really doesn't seem much worth stalking over.
Of course it doesn't make sense to you Mike, you actually have clue, where as most of the entertainment establishment doesn't, and they really don't want one either.
I would have to believe it does extend to companies/people who don't maintain their original copy. However, that might make it difficult to prove someone infringed if you can't actually demonstrate what they are infringing on.
Oh and if you had read the comments on the original article, you would see someone corrected the author. Which probably means he originally said Sony, then changed it after his initial post.
Re: Was this story about Google Voice? Why Yes, it is!
Hmm, seems the date of the post he linked to is 1/26/2010 and the post states that Google made an announcement "today" which would be the same date as the article. The point wasn't that Google has Google Voice, but that they created a web based app to bypass Apple's app approval process. This would certainly to fit with the general timeliness of other Tech Dirt articles as it just occurred yesterday. Perhaps you should ensure comprehension of the entire article before criticizing his timeliness?
Hmmm, have you heard of time limited demos and crippleware? They aren't the full version, unlimited version, but they certainly are a "taste" of the product. However, that said, I do see your point that most software companies aren't going to be selling t-shirts. There are other options, such as support contracts and such.
So I just tried to access the article and was prevented by doing so. I did take the time to look things over and noticed there is a free option. Admittedly, I would then have to wait for a year before I could read this particular paper, but at least there is a free option.
That would be the US Trade Representative. Can't remember his name offhand, but Mike has mentioned it several times. More to the point, Obama is aware of this, but has done nothing to bring about the transparencies he promised during his campaign. So tell me, where should the buck stop?
Hmm, let's see 500 Million over 10 years averages out to 50 million/year. BPI is estimating 26.3 million for 3 years total. Is that not a significant difference? Granted, the article says that the ISP are estimating up to 1 million a day, so the government's estimate is lower than that, but still ISP's say 1 millino a day, gov't says 500 million over 10 years (avg 50 million /year), and yet BPI says a fraction of the gov't estimate. Seems that BPI is still stretching way to far on how little it will cost.
I use social networks fairly heavily now, but my grades in my college classes don't seem to be affected. Perhaps it has more to do with time management skills and the willingness of the students to study instead of something they enjoy more.
So now explain to me where in 9-11 and the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber, electronics were where? Who saw all the exposed circuit boards? As I recall, 9-11 was box cutters, the shoe bomber was trying to light his shoe with a match, and I didn't want to know how the underwear bomber was trying to detonate his.
And there are books aimed at the 10-12 year old range that teach them how to make stuff like this. Just go take a look at the "Evil Genius" series. I just bought one for my nephew for Christmas. The one on spy gadgets has lots of interesting gadgets. Granted, they may need some assistance, but the projects aren't difficult to build.
