After he wrapped up, the leaders of Theranos stood before their employees and surveyed the room. Then a chant erupted. “Fuck you . . .,” employees began yelling in unison, “Carreyrou.” It began to grow louder still. “Fuck you, Carreyrou!” Soon men and women in lab coats, and programmers in T-shirts and jeans, joined in. They were chanting with fervor: “Fuck you, Carreyrou!,” they cried out. “Fuck you, Carreyrou! Fuck. You. Carrey-rou!"
There are no lawyers, it's a "pro-se" plaintiff. That being said, I'd think you'd need more than just a name to file a lawsuit. Address? Id? IANAL so not sure, but it seems there's a hole in the system if this goes through.
While I'd love it if this happens, it's a tough sell.
The whole "they broke into my house" real world pseudo-analogy muddies the waters for jurors, and most people prosecuted under this CFAA bullshit are unsympathetic to a public primed on irrational (and in some cases overtly anti-rational) fear.
You and I might support Aaron Swartz (RIP) and Edward Snowden (at least I do), but I doubt we're in the majority.
When Larpenter was asked whether there is a conflict in him investigating an alleged crime involving himself, he replied, "If you're gonna lie about me and make it under a fictitious name, I'm gonna come after you."
This isn't even science. Software automates application of theories.
For example, ballistics software takes theories of ballistic trajectories and wind resistance, factors in information like projectile details and wind velocity, and predicts a landing spot.
You could achieve the same thing on paper, but it's less reliable over time and much slower. That being said, it's reproducible.
This software automates what science, exactly? Computers can only do what we can tell them to do (Skynet notwithstanding) so what amazing algorithmics did some podunk company from nowhere come up with to solve problems that have stymied some of the best funded organizations on the planet? (e.g US defense dept)

They weren't fooled by it cause they're dumb. They were fooled by it because they don't care if it's true. It feeds into their narrative.

Some nerd can update the app to let people choose a central node address, and allow people to run their own servers.
Doing that would qualify as not being evil.
