And again, why would Visa and Mastercard want to be responsible for unfounded claims by the RIAA? SOPA/PIPA pushers want everybody else to be liable except for the idiots who can't seem to figure out how to deal with people wanting their content and are unable to figure out how to deliver and monetize.

I don't know why I keep thinking about Oregon Trail. No matter what a great shot you were and how close you got you always got the "You died of cholera" out of nowhere. Statistically this was probably correct but I don't remember anybody making it all the way. Reality bites!

Re:
How much does Netflix cost Hollywood? What an asinine question! In my case, I have seen a lot more content because of Netflix that I would never have seen otherwise. So Hollywood gets a cut of my reasonable monthly fees and I watch less commercial television (which is free because of ad revenue). Now the library...that is where I get a lot of free content from Hollywood! =]
There's a reason they're trying to drive up costs on their streaming.
Cause they are greedy bastards who want to be paid more money for something that costs very little to provide on a worldwide scale. The box office is blowing records every year. If you spend $100M to make a good movie that people will watch you will make your money...well maybe not by Hollywood accounting standards.

Plus the media doesn't tend to like publicly attacking their opponents, look at how most media companies pretend that Fox News is a legitimate news organization while Fox News returns the favor by bashing every other news organization as dangerous supporters of Obama.
So who is the honest one here? Lesson 1 - None of them!

PUBLISHER: Mr. Bradbury, we must make your book an ebook because that is how millions of people read books now. We'll price the ebook at $10 to encourage people to buy the cheaper, physical versions.
BRADBURY: I guess so...is it $10 for the hardcover ebook or the paperback ebook?

Re: "While online piracy is obviously bad, this is the wrong way..."
A penny from 1B pirates is $10M. A dime from 100M pirates is $10M. A dollar from 10M pirates is $10M. Figure out how to get the pirates to pay and you will recoup the $10M you insist on spending to make your film.
P.S. - the term pirates in this context means any consumer since the industry assumes all their consumers are pirates.

Sigh, what a sad and easily debunked argument. Criminals use phones, cars, highways to break the law all the time. Anybody who provides these services should be shut down because they are funding "grifters"?

All this extra burden will come with a nice tax added to consumers bills and probably some good tax breaks for themselves. Big Series of Tubes (if I can borrow a naming convention from bob) will make sure they don't have to pay a dime to conform to law and small competitors will likely fold under the burden of regulation clearing the field of what little competition exists at this point. Win-Win for Big Series of Tubes!

Re: "the good name of our military"?
And how is that "Iraqi oil" treating us. Gas prices are higher now than under Bush (although you don't hear screams from the media about Obama doing nothing about it). So thinking it was all about oil is a little goofy on your account but pretty much par for you.

If anyone painted themselves into a corner it is the RIAA. Their the ones who want digital downloads to count as copies in some situations and licenses in another. Now that is coming back to bite them. Mike just points out how the RIAA is trying to all they can to make more money for themselves and give less back to artists.

A good metric
Well, with the War on Drugs we are overflowing our prisons and making light pot users criminals. So when any prole can be called a criminal when we want them to be then we will call it success.
