The high cost of developing drugs shouldn’t be a badge of honor for drug firms; there’s no reason it has to be this expensive. The outlay doesn’t justify the high cost of prescription drugs--just because something was expensive to create doesn’t make it good. On the other hand, even high-cost drugs are only a small factor in rising health costs. Medicines are just easy to scapegoat because their prices are easy to track. We can all only hope that new technologies and a better understanding of biology will turn things around./div>
One main point that we are missing here is that the $300 million spent to develop the drug is the smaller part of the budget. R & D costs are only about 1/3 of the total budget. The other 2/3 is spent on advertising the drug to consumers.
If the $300 million is just for development, then you can be sure another $600 million will have been spent on advertising.
Why cannot the entire budget be spent on the R&D of the drug? At least make sure the majority of money is spent on R&D. This would decrease the costs of medications for consumers and increase the knowledge base for the drug companies./div>
I went the the Daily News site to comment on the original story. It required me to register to comment. Ok, i thought, how hard could this be...
Well, the link on the original page to register took me to another Daily News page with a banner ad for evony. No registration form. I thought, that is odd, lets try this again. Same result. I tried the link in the header to register, now we are cooking!
No, I have to setup a secret question, secret answer, username ( not email ), zip code, country, gender and year of birth - all required in addition to email, first and last name. Plus I am solicited for info on my industry, job title and income?
Or I can link my social network accounts to their site.
Right. The columnist being clueless about technology is a mere reflection of the clueless registration of the Daily News.
Holy cow, what kind of zoo do you have in your world?
Monkeys mating with penguins? Really?
Now for the Duh-du-joir - Anyone who starts an argument by saying "( insert topic here ) is all ( insert adjectives )" as in "It's [Techdirt] all monopoly FUD" has just lost.
I take exception to the "Pirated movie = No Value" phrase. I have seen many movies in my lifetime via various delivery methods: movie theaters, school class rooms, streaming video, rental stores and kiosks, and yes - "pirated" movies.
Just because I have seen a movie via any of these methods does not mean I will never see it again. Nor does it mean I will never buy a ticket or pay for a video game or associated merchandise.
When I see a good movie, or sometimes even a really really bad one, of course I will want to watch it more than one time.
I have seen movies that were "pirated", and then gone to see it on the big screen. Yes, actually buying a ticket to a movie that I would otherwise never see. I have also bought the movie on dvd or blu-ray when it was available.
Its not as clear cut as you would have it. Not all people pirate movies. Not all people who do pirate never set foot inside a movie theater or video store./div>
The constant use by Apple of the term "double-tap" evokes negative stereotypes of professional assassins - so called "Mafia Hit Men".
The entire Italian American community should rise up and demand that Apple stop using this racist term. Perhaps Johnny Cochran can file a class action lawsuit against Apple?/div>

Lets just make all laws broad enough to be applied in almost any situation. Who needs to be presumed innocent until proven guilty?
(And - Archie? Really? Cranky old guy showing his age.)/div>
Re: S M E A R
Once these bills pass and become law, ICE will start seizing web sites at an incredible rate, likely starting with Techdirt!
When Mike is no longer on the web - what will you do with your time?
Maybe just sit there and mock round things for not having corners?/div>
