We recently got a Bluray player at our home when we upgraded the AV equipment, we needed one to play 3D Bluray's to go along with the new TV. My wife and I had never bothered with Bluray before this, since we've had it we've started using it less and less. Between the constant stream of firmware updates it requires to even play a movie and the 25 minutes of warnings and ads (warnings, really? can't the player tell I've got the damn disc in the player?! It isn't stolen!) we are forced to watch before we can even start the movie we've decided it just isn't worth it.
We've seen a few video files on the TV, streamed from the PC through the Xbox, and really who hasn't by this point in time? My wife comments that we should just download everything because it is just so much easier and we don't have to be treated like thieves every time we watch something. I find that a little ironic that she feels like less of a "thief" (her words not mine) watching a torrented show than she does by watching a legit Bluray. It is getting harder and harder to stay away from torrents with all of this crap, thank god Canada got Netflix! Now if only they would add some content to make it worth watching torrents wouldn't even come up as an option.
We just got Netflix in Canada so streaming is the only option we have up here. Now if only these deals would mean Netflix would add some actual content up here it would be great! I've been looking for an option for legally obtaining movies and TV programming, so far Netflix isn't it and lord knows I'm not paying $7 to rent a movie from Blockbuster.
The Canadian price is cheaper in the US? Really? Up here the US price is always cheaper than the Canadian price. The conversion rate isn't that big of a deal anymore, I think it is something like $0.97 this morning (thank you for all of your wars and bailouts BTW!) but for some reason Canadian's are paying more for everyday items than Americans do. Just look at everyone crossing the border for a day of shopping in US.
The self-absorbed comment is a pretty common generalization about Americans around the world though. The old adage about a few bad apples ruining it for the rest? The real question is, was he right? Would anyone have noticed if the press hadn't taken his "insult" and plastered it all across the internet? Would anyone have cared?
I don't wish I was European OR American, I like being Canadian just fine thank you very much. The majority of the US bashing in Canada seems to come from the East, Liberal territory interestingly enough. Canadian's are allies of the USA, I think we just get a little uptight about being the little sibling and talk some trash to make ourselves feel better.
I will give you the Queen point, not only do we pay homage, she is actually our head of state... How does that make any sense?!
I would think not, that seems to be a pretty standard train of thought these days.
I wasn't commenting on whether or not pirating is wrong, I just found the greed part ironic. Corporate greed = bad, consumer greed bad?? Greed is greed is greed.
Your full concentration isn't on the road if you are holding a conversation with someone in your car either... Is that the next ban? No talking in the car at all?
You are talking about EA. To access the online portion of their games you need to enter a 1 time use code the first time you go online with it. Anyone who buys the game used needs to pony up $10 for the privilege of going online with the game.
I think it is kind of greedy but it isn't the worst solution. I tend to buy games brand new anyway, I just trade in old ones to get a discount on new ones. The only time I buy used is if I missed a game while it was popular and it is steeply discounted. For example I just bought Mercenaries 2 at Blockbuster the other day for $2.50. It wasn't worth $60 to me but at the same price as a cup of coffee why not? Funny thing is their isn't any DLC released for that game. They didn't make any money off of me from the primary sale of the game but they could have if they offered some decent DLC!
I've got a question I was hoping some of you who have a better grasp on this stuff than I do can help me with.
Whenever this question comes up, and it comes up a lot these days, you always get some developer or gamer who doesn't like the idea of used games jumping into the discussion. A common argument I hear from people who are for used game sales is that a game is just like a car, should Ford or GM get a cut of each used car sale? The standard response from a developer is that a car isn't the same as a digital good, a car suffers from wear and tear while a video game will not. A digital file suffers from no degradation and therefore should be treated differently than a physical good.
Now when I hear this my first thoughts are doesn't a disc suffer from degradation much in the same way any other physical object would? The next thought tends to be, you decided to create digital goods, tough titties if it doesn't degrade. Code in some self-degradation and see how many people buy your game.
Just wondering what you guys make of that argument?
So I'm guessing that what you are trying to say is that by scanning a copy of a physical book you already own you are STEALING the electronic copy? I can't really make heads or tails of your comment, this is my best guess.
I didn't see anyone asking for free books. They were asking for the publisher to include some extras to help entice more people to pay for what they are selling, not exactly the same thing...
My local library offers ebooks for "rental", I guess is the word, these days. The funny thing about it is they will only rent out the 1 or 2 copies that they "have" at a time. You have to wait for whoever currently has the book out to "return" it (aka the DRM expires) before they will let someone else "check it out".
I'm pretty sure this isn't the library's idea, but seriously who came up with that brilliant idea? Trying to force an infinite digital good into the same box as a scarce physical one. Great plan guys, great plan.
Re: Its not DRM its the firmware, but you know that right !!!..
Where exactly do you go "to the DRM code" on your BD player? Oh that's right! The firmware! Thanks for dropping in.
The only reason you need to update your "firmware" on BD players so often is to get the latest and greatest encryption keys (aka DRM) for the new discs. Do you even know anything about the BD spec or do you just come here to spout off about things you don't like?
Oh, you've got to check out "Henry Rollins ft The Techno Viking". It's pretty awesome, takes a stand up comedy act about how bad techno music is and he turns it into a pretty damn good techno song.
This isn't something to compare to classical music or anything like that. I think it is popular because the majority of the songs are humorous as well as catchy. I just don't buy the argument that the people who put this stuff together aren't talented. How many people do you know can take a news cast or a commercial and turn it into a pretty good song?
I personally think the stuff that DJ Porter does is better than this Autotune the News stuff. Check some of his stuff out (Slapchop remix, Press Hop and You Play to Win are some of the best IMO): http://www.youtube.com/djsteveporter

Potential Customer: "I like this demo/game I pirated, if only there was some way to expand on what I am able to do with it..."
Game Developer: "Well if you pay me money you can unlock all of these additional features."
Potential Customer: "I think I will do that! You just gave me a reason to give you my money."
Is it really that hard to understand?
