This is good news to finally get their opinion heard in Congress. Long overdue but getting there now.
I cannot say this is a big surprise when it was Congressman Issa who was jointly behind the OPEN bill which is an alternative to SOPA and PIPA. So working hard to kill those two and to promote his own which is how politics should happen.
It should be good news that SOPA & PIPA are becoming election issues. Soon we can see what way they vote and anyone voting for these acts would be seriously harming their election chances.
It is well known that politicians do votes that make the majority of the public happy near election time. All the bribe money in the World helps them none if public do not like them and vote for a rival.
So reminding them who's butt is on the line should win us a few extra politicians to vote against SOPA and PIPA.
I can't believe anyone would say it is fair to censor an EFF domain. They are an organization strongly active in protecting a free, fair and uncensored Internet and they help people being harassed and abused by large organizations and copyright sharks.
Since they do nothing unlawful then congratulations for wanting to censor a different opinion. I would not even class them as pro-piracy but anti-abuse that copyright does.
Anyway the more the copyright side try to force us to eat crap like SOPA and PIPA the more people who will side with the EFF's position.
It is right to say that piraattilahti means "Pirate Bay" in Finnish. It is reasonable to assume that this domain once pointed to TPB before someone changed the DNS record to have it point to Finland's version of the EFF instead.
This seems a good action to take to create some false censorship stories... just like this one. They should have used a less descriptive domain.
Looks to me like John Morton has been under too much stress with a few too many sleepless nights. He should take a holiday... a really really long holiday.
I can't say I know much about counterfeit goods, beyond the rare adverts for "replica" products through my door (at least they are honest). I do know though that many women buy replica handbags because they cannot afford the originals. So little gain for the original sales by stopping the fakes.
I have a better idea about their doggy drugs when other poorer countries produce their own versions instead of paying the owner some super high change. So cheaper medicine floods the poorer country and then some bright spark gets the idea to export them for profit. Now I am not saying that their are not some totally fake drugs around but the vast majority are simply patent enforcement. They are lawful in the poorer country but not outside it.
What I find most interesting is that in this video one section reads "Piracy Doesn't Work". That is a totally wrong statement seeing how since 2003 piracy has helped to totally reshape the markets. Years ago there were many delays to maximise profit but now DVD/Bluray sales, and lawful on-line screening, can quickly following the cinema release. So piracy and 3D are the two biggest causes of market progressions since 2003.
Well that sounds to me like not only an anti-SOPA/PIPA stance but also a pro-OPEN stance.
It seems helpful to move piracy away from punishment and instead turn it over to trade control. Even to encourage piracy sites to turn lawful in exchange for a cut of the profits.
Then we can separate out those who do it for money against those who do it for more honourable reasons even if the latter kind get some serious funding squeeze.
These policies are an old market concept which only bore fruit when people had no other choice. So by their own actions they lose to the competition even if that rival is piracy.
Artificial supply delays benefit the public none when it is all about trying to maximise profit. It is the same concept that leads to zoning or artificially separated markets.
We can only be thankful there is an alternative so in the end they wise up simply because only good actions, and not a monopoly, now benefits their sales.
The next 24 to 48 hours will be most interesting to discover who the buyer was.
To become a piracy site would be most enjoyable like placing your own flag in an enemy's headquarters. The second place option would have to be an information site about how to battle copyright trolls.
What would be most depressing is if another copyright troll or law business purchased this domain.
At least we can be thankful that it did not sell for much but for some minor domain name if was still as serious price.
Chris Dodd is the head of the MPAA. My point is that no one would ever get this job if they believed that copyright was anything less as the best idea the World has ever had.
Now if only everyone could ignore him and leave him to his fantasy world.
People bidding early are being stupid when this only causes a bidding war. They beat you, you beat them and so on. Price goes up and up beyond what the item is worth.
It is much better to snipe the auction. Just figure out the maximum fair price you want to pay and bid at 3 to 10 seconds before auction close.
The snipe service I use is PhantomBidder but you can get PC software like HammerSnipe.
Hilary Clinton sure owes us an explanation. All her long discussions on a free, fair, open and uncensored Internet, followed by her SOPA/PIPA concerns, then she is the very head of foreign policy in the State Department that FORCED Spain to do everything she claims she hates.
Fucking politicians would sell their soul to the Devil for a gold coin. I can't wait for the next time Hilary is taking public questions to highlight the colour of her hypercritical actions. Had she any honour she would condemn this Spanish censorship and quit.
I am only happy to see eBay get sued. Still I would agree that this case is totally insane. Had they wanted a better sale price then that is what fixed priced auctions are for.
Just a shame eBay has not been sued for valid reasons and I can sure name a few examples.
All I can say is that when Andrew Crossley of ACS:Law was going down at least he was nice/wise enough to keep to the scheduled appointments.
I don't know what the people behind Righthaven are thinking when this lack of an organized schedule not only got them into this mess in the first place but this policy will not win them any favours when it comes to sorting out their finances.
He should also keep in mind that the Judge has many other options should he be found to be uncooperative. I expect currently the Judge just thinks he is an idiot and needs a push down the right path.
I am one person who directly knows that the "shoot first ask questions later" approach to copyright enforcement is a gloriously bad idea.
First is that when they attack a business they do often cause serious damage. Second is that when they discover their mistake they simply won't turn around and say "our mistake let us compensate you". In all they are not one bit interested in justice when you are simply their rival and they aim to destroy you by any legal means possible.
So society should be very cautious in handing these cretins any new powers to attack their rivals. Laws like SOPA & PIPA are prime for abuse and abused they will be.
I can say that I am a pro-piracy person when I support what is good for the general population. I would much prefer to see no further strengthening of copyright enforcement but if they do really feel the need to tackle piracy then OPEN is indeed the least Internet damaging option.
My point was that Americans are famous for being bad at geography. Not all people of course but many are still working on their states and avoid anything outside that. So some Americans would indeed falsely believe Columbia was in Africa and not South America.
For a more well known example of American knowledge then cruise ship tours around Europe are common for those in North America. In this case the tour guide pointed out that their next stop would be Southampton in England. When he asked if there were any questions then one American woman soon asked "Do they speak English here?"
There is no sense for the RIAA to have a monopoly these days and yet they are the major push behind SOPA. Musicians can both create and distribute their songs for close to nothing while raking in the profit. Promotion they can also do for various cost.
Fame will always be exploited and tapped by others leading to concerts and TV appearances. Even song writers will seek out good musicians to partnership with.
So there is no need for the RIAA at all except in the case of musicians wanting to go down the old route. Just keep in mind who owns the copyright when some record company wants to loan you a million dollars to make an album. A good position to be in to then have them screw you over as they please.
If there is viable life outside the RIAA, and there is certainly that, then the RIAA should not be allowed monopoly status. So in the case of SOPA tell them to sod off and compete in an open market.
What is ironic is that piracy should be the MPAA & RIAA's greatest enemy but it is NOT. They actually love piracy when it is the perfect excuse to pass such draconian laws to grab more market control.
Then their greatest friend should be their own success but again it is NOT. Like the MPAA's yearly gross income simply proves that their alleged damage from piracy is all a lie.
It then appears in their best interests to keep TPB and others up so they always have their excuse for even harsher laws. Their real threat is the Internet an out of control market worth trillions to the owner.
