You could do a mini-series for the techdirt newbs. I feel that a lot of people might care (more) about the issues discussed here if they understood a little background.

As long as we're pointing out fields where artificial scarcity protects the veterans... how bout taking a swipe at medicine? Because of the way doctors are trained in the USA, it literally takes an act of congress to be able to increase the size of training programs (to be able to graduate more doctors in a year).
So everyone knows there is a doctor shortage, but we wouldn't want to go too crazy in correcting that problem because then there'd actually be competition for the people who've already fought their way though the gate.
Because collecting information is an automated process now. Spying on everyone takes virtually no effort, but analyzing that data is an entirely different matter.
Good point. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay 1/2 the unit cost for a map update. Open source maps are free to update - so in five years (when they are equal on paper) OSM will be superior in actuality. 90% of TomTom users will refuse to pay for updated software - so they will be the less safe drivers (following TomTom's logic).
I really like the way the AMA sessions work over at reddit. High value threads work their way to the top of the page and it's really easy to follow the discussions.
If you're upset by the FBI's actions (or the DEA's for that matter) you should make sure you're on the list of potential jurors in your area.
Jurors can decide whatever they want without regard to the written law. If you think something is wrong (entrapment, drug enforcement, etc) do your best to get on a jury and don't agree with the government's charges.
Make sure everyone you know is registered and understands their rights as a juror.
You make a good point. Numbers are meaningless without some perspective.
That's why it's good to ask and find out exactly what's going on rather than just assume that one person was pinged 8 million times over the course of 30 seconds.
I'm sure that my average monthly usage is nowhere near 2GB/month, but I was too lazy to verify that. That's the main reason I went with Sprint's unlimited data. I won't use it, but I don't have to think about it if I go on a streaming spree.
Reddit has been known to raise large amounts of money when properly motivated. It would be funny to see a hamfisted internet attempt to buy a politician with a kickstarter account.
"Dear politicians, how much does it cost to buy representation? Can you vote on it for this many?"
I'm trying to cancel my godaddy account right now. For the life of me I can't figure out how to do it. It seems like they change the process every few weeks so that it's difficult to do.

None of this would have happened if New Zealand had simply gone by the law when the US first came-a-knocking.
